Love Is The Most Powerful Force & Presence In The Universe
Tonight I’m basking in the arms of love. You know the feeling?
I just returned home from a benefit in a small venue with Jason Mraz, Bushwalla, and Luc and the Lovingtons. The causes were organizations that work toward ending slavery and human trafficking.
Bushwalla is always hilarious and amazing. Check him out: Acoustic Rhymer That dude knows how to entertain in the coolest of cool ways. He’s wild in the best sense of the word.
Mraz keeps it real – he pours love out like the supply is endless – and it is. He reminds us. Lucky for us he throws in a good dose of irreverent humor. Always a plus. Check out my post: My God Dances
Luc and the Lovingtons, wow! Love and more love. Outrageous music and, you got it, LOVE. Check out this video: http://bit.ly/98MtYP
Oh, and then there was the guy, Benjerman, who painted a large piece during the concert to reflect the moment. It was beautiful! He lived 15 years in the Amazon and his dream is to open a spiritual center in Columbia. He told great stories that warmed the heart.
Luc took the opportunity to volunteer in New Orleans just after Hurricane Katrina. He found himself in a shelter, and as you can imagine it was bleak. He found a way to bring hope and joy alive with his music and went back to record a song he and the children at the shelter created. The female lead is a 10-year old. Check it out: Luc And The Lovingtons Freedom Song
Jason Mraz discovered it and loved it. He’s spread the word by sharing it as well: Jason Mraz with Voices of Prayze – Freedom Song
The Morning After
It’s the next day now and the fun and joy continued over at Jitter’s Cafe:
Benjerman (forgive me for butchering the spelling) is the guy on the left in the hat).
Feeding The Soul and Soulfulness
Being in a room with a couple hundred souls who care and want to love is a powerful, uplifting experience. It’s good for the soul. Like the sound of a drum, it brings us back to center.
The message, the music, the painting, the dancing, the stories, the camaraderie, it all takes us home. Home to who we are. Home to love.
We ARE love. Love is not in short supply on this planet. You simply need to look in the direction where love resides.
Your Focus = Your Life
Your life is largely a reflection of where you choose to focus. Where you focus most will reveal the quality of your life.
If your focus is on the news and conversations about the terrible state of our planet, you may lose sight of the tremendous beauty that is unfolding before your eyes daily. The beauty that is nature, a child’s face, outrageous music, street art, or irreverent humor.
At least a million organizations are contributing to human rights, social justice, and environmental integrity on a daily basis. Turn your attention there and feel the empowerment and sacredness of being a beacon of light and hope.
Take a look at this organization I learned of at the concert that Luc and the Lovingtons contribute to: Harmonic Humanity. Check out this video about Harmonic Humanity’s contribution of love to the disenfranchised through music. This organization provides CD’s of artist’s music to homeless people in San Francisco for $1.00 per CD. The homeless individual can sell it for $10.00. It’s about hope and dignity. This organization hopes to spread this concept to other communities. If you feel inspired, it would be a great contribution to your community.
The Ugly and The Beautiful
The destructive and the beautiful are both “realities”. Both exist. How would we know beauty and love if there were nothing to compare it to?
Which reality do you prefer to live is the relevant question?
Choosing to focus more upon beauty than destruction doesn’t mean you are living with “rose colored” glasses. Who would deny that destruction and pain exist? And at times we experience dark nights of the soul. How we process and engage with these experiences says everything about our characters and resilience.
If I fall, I rise again. Friends support me. I them. My choice is to believe in love, imperfect love. How about you?
What brings you joy?
Speaking of joy: Check out Arvind Devalia’s picinic = fun. Arvind is an uplifter.
Lately, for me it’s been my new found passion for the Djembe, movement, the hula hoop I have my eye on, and thoughts of my next trip to Esalen keeping my brain in a state of “oh yeah”.
It’s this moment of inspiration, a happiness in my heart. Awed that love exists at all as we rotate around spinning on a beautiful planet in outer space.
It’s jumping off the rope into the creek with my 8-year old nephew and friend over and over again and then wiping each other out with water balloons.
I’ve taken lots of time this summer to play after a stretch of intense “work”. Loving my work is the icing on the cake. Still, playing is wonderful and I love it! On sunny days, I look at my work and then look out at the beach and ask myself what I want to do that day. It takes me about one minute to grab my boogie board and head out the door – the beach always beckons and why not.
Years ago I recall a Demartini exercise which involved writing down what you most love and doing it as much as possible. I realized what I loved most was being at the ocean. I dreamed of being at the ocean daily. Today I see it from my home and hear the waves as I lay down to sleep.
Have you done the things that bring you joy recently? If not, no worries, just do!
If you haven’t thought about what brings a smile to your lips, write down 5 things that bring you joy and list them in order of importance (like the Demartini exercise).
What do YOU love? How can you incorporate it into your life regularly? What can you do today?
If You Want To Be Uplifted, Be With Uplifting People
The concert and the people in the room was a great reminder that if you want to feel uplifted be with uplifting people – and be an uplifter.
If you want love, give love.
Surround yourself with people who care about others and care about the planet. People who know how to love.
Be a person who cares. Shine!
Recognize and claim your magnificence and the tremendous opportunity of being in your remarkable body on this planet (if I hear one more woman criticize her body, I shall weep).
I mean, let’s get real, we’re on a beautiful earth spinning around in outer space. Now, that’s more outrageous than science fiction.
Get excited (pant pant): You get to be here in your body having your own unique life. Grasp onto the possibility that you create your life and have at it.
Have some fun! Feed your soul! Play! Write me about what you’re doing these days that you love. What inspires and uplifts you?
Be well, and may you experience the best relationships ever!

Well, one thing I love is reading the likes of the beauty you poured out in this piece; I love reading about love. I love it when I feel loved and, at this very moment in time, I feel love coming from many directions. I love loving and I have an ample supply of people like my children and friends and you to love. I have the desert, the ocean, the mountains, the words I play with everyday, cats, my neighborhood with its cafes and walkways… Memories of childhood and marital bliss and opportunities that I didn’t miss. The likelihood that I will awaken in the morning and make it through the day and if not I will have loved the life I lived, much of what I received and much of what I was able to give. I love that I fought off sleepiness to make these expressions known. I’m now hoping that I can make it to bed without collapsing in a heap, in a coma, after having gotten up at 5:15 am to drive to Escondido to make a movie and all my scenes are in the can – loved the whole experience. I love that boredom isn’t in my vocabulary but grogginess is, zzz-zzz-zzz. Lookout, bedbugs, here I come. You can bite but this old dude won’t feel you tonight. He be muy consado.
Keep it up, Lauren. Your love is showing. I love the way it glows.
very nice and insightful post, thanks Lauren

You can’t beat that.
Laying down to sleep with the ocean waves sounds like a slice of Heaven on Earth.

Hi J.D.
How goes it? Nice to see you.
Yes, doing that simple exercise and seeing OCEAN at the top of the list caused a light bulb to go off in my head. Hmm, my brain said, why not live at the ocean? It took awhile to arrange an ocean view but it’s lovely.
What do you love most?
Warm regards,
Lauren

Hey You,
How lucky are you? This sounds like it was a wonderful time. I have to say, I’m a huge Jason Mraz fan and am quite jealous. I’m glad to see you doing so well away from here. I do miss you! xoxo
Dear Jason,
How great to hear from you. I miss you too and my friends from the old homestead. I do still enjoy coming over to work now and then.
It really was a magical evening and Sun. morning at the cafe.
Just got back from boogie boarding again
– next year I want to learn to surf.
Thanks for the well wishes.

I was at that concert too and you are sooooo right. It was so powerful to be in the midst of positivity, creativity and productive energy. People feeling good and doing good. It was a high. I love what you said about doing what you love. Writing down those things that make you happy and then doing them daily. What you wrote made me think. What do I love? I love to be with friends and enjoy conversation over good food and drink. I love to entertain. I love to travel. I love to take naps on a lazy afternoon. I love to cook. I love to go to movies. I love to watch people enjoy food I have created. I love to have guests. I love to watch them leave and enjoy the quiet return of sanctuary after excitement. And then I think…I do all of these things. I want to do them even more. Thank you for the words that brought these thoughts to awareness. And thank you to the musicians and organizers who brought the night and its charitable contributions to fruition.
Dear Heather,
Basking in such love is a great feeling is it not?
I love how you know what you love and do it frequently. It doesn’t get much better than that! You’re a wise being to follow your heart and do what you love all the time.
It’s great to hear from you.
Love,
Lauren

What a beautiful post, Lauren! I just love everything about this!
I have never heard of Harmonic Humanity and I’m in SF married to a musician! Where have I been??? I’m so checking them out after I leave this comment.
And this: “If you want love, give love” — this is so simple and so true! A good mantra for all of us.
Thank you for sharing your wonderful experience with us!
Dear Belinda,
Always good to see you!
Yes, Harmonic Humanity is an amazing and uplifting project. It is heartening to know there are so many organizations working toward the betterment of humanity.
I know you know that because you share remarkable individuals and organizations with us from time to time and I love it.
Love is easy to give and in the situations in which it’s challenging – well, that is our “work”. Loving more and being more compassionate are my deepest desires.
You are easy to love.

Hi Lauren,
The feeling of love at the venue reminds me of what I’ve noticed when I’ve done any volunteering- the way the atmosphere seems super-charged with love in the spirit of service to others.
The way I’ve recently made sure to do what I love on a regular basis (which is to paint) is to start a “blog” to make sure I have work done to post every week. Otherwise I seem to let responsibilities take precedence over time to paint.
The blog is really riding on training wheels, but I’m figuring it out as I go along and it’s fun!

Dear Lance,
Thank you so much for your loving words. I always know that going to your site brings a ton of love my way and to everyone who visits.
You always find creative ways to UPLIFT the soul. It’s good to have our souls and hearts uplifted. Lately, fun has been one of my favorite ways to enter that realm.
My hula hoop has been going constantly!
Happy day to you, Lance. You are a gift and I appreciate you immensely.

Lauren, This benefit sounds so wonderful and joyful. You made it come alive in my mind.
“Write me about what you’re doing these days that you love. What inspires and uplifts you?”
I’m living with a wonderful man who has retired 3 times and always goes back to work because it’s his passion. Last dinner after dinner, we walked along the beach at Chesapeake Bay to see the herons, ospreys, seagulls, terns, and other assembled birds.
I’m also blogging about aging, the dismal myths and the positive realities. I love to celebrate people like Fats Domino (now 80), who managed to survive Hurricane Katrina after being thought to have perished and who isssued a CD called Alive and Kicking the following year. Or like 78-year-old Dr. Kenneth Cooper whose life work revolutionized the way we think about health and exercise and who continues to run and do weight training.
Madeleine Kolb´s last blog ..The Right Stuff Award- Dr Kenneth Cooper
Dear Madeleine,
I loved your description of waking along the beach on the Bay with your husband – who loves his work! And the examples of individuals who “rock on” into the aging process intact.
Today I was delighted to hear that Bushwalla is coming back for a concert next month. And I’ve been hula hooping to Luc and The Lovingtons and Bushwalla these days.
Also, been boogie boarding and learning to play the Djembe drum. While I’m only 56, I see many people around me my age who don’t reach out and relish all the fun things life has to offer. Clearly, you’re not one of those people!
Thanks for writing and I look forward to checking out your posts.
Warm regards,
Lauren
